Education Pipeline Key Transition Point 1

Ready To Learn

Each Kindergarten teacher has a mission to ensure every child’s readiness for continued success in school; regardless of the starting point.  Kindergarten teachers “meet children where they are” and provide them with the skills to be successful in future grade levels.  Some children, due to their early year’s circumstances, begin their school years with limited development of social, motor and pre-academic skills.  This places the children in a position of needing to “catch up”.

Development of these critical skills provides children with the necessary foundation for school success.  Many organizations in our county are working to support early learning for all children.  SEI supports these groups to align efforts and resources to improve school readiness.

Sample Measure:  The Kindergarten Readiness Assessment for Literacy (KRAL) is often used as a gauge of readiness for entering Kindergarteners.  The KRAL is being revised by the Ohio Department of Education.  The new measure will include not only literacy but also numeracy and social development.  The KRAL will be one measure used to assess progress on this transition point.

Summit County KRAL scores for Kindergarteners 2010:

Band One:    (intensive instruction)   15.8%

Band Two:    (targeted instruction)    37.2%

Band Three: (enriched instruction)    47.0%
