      <title>The University of Akron's First "iPad Symposium"</title>
      <description><![CDATA[<p>
	The College of Education's Center For Literacy Department at The University of Akron is sponsoring their first "<strong>iPad Symposium</strong>" on Saturday, May <strong>11, 2013</strong>. &nbsp;This event will be aimed at K-12 teachers and administrators who are interested in incorporating the iPad and new literacies in their classrooms. &nbsp;There will be a number of hands-on sessions that will be facilitated by a great group of Ohio based teachers, many of whom are Apple Distinguished Educators. &nbsp;To learn more about this event see the attached flyer or visit the College of Education's Community Engagement section on The University of Akron's website.</p>

      <title>The University of Akron's "iPad Play Groups" Program</title>
      <description><![CDATA[<p>
	The University of Akron's Center For Literacy is launching a new program called "<strong>iPad Play Groups</strong>" for Summit County parents and teachers this month. &nbsp;This program is aimed at young children, ages 3 and 4, and their parents. &nbsp;The goal is to convene several small groups on campus for a weekly "play date" focused on incorporating developmentally appropriate media activities on the iPad.</p>

      <title>GAR Foundation - Educator Initiative Grant Guidelines</title>
      <description><![CDATA[<p>

	<strong style="color: rgb(9, 54, 89); font-size: 20px;">Summit Education Initiative regrets to inform you that the Community Forum Event and screening of the film “First Generation” that was to be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Buchtel Community Learning Center is cancelled due to such low response.&nbsp; It is SEI’s hope and intent to show this film at a different time, which hopefully will be more conducive to increased attendance.</strong></p>

	<strong>The free showing will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m.&nbsp; Following the film there will be a time for discussion, to get information on college access programs in our community, and to enjoy some light refreshments.</strong></p>

													<strong>Introducing the BioInnovation Academy</strong></p>
												<p>
													The Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA) is proud to&nbsp;annouce its new educational initiative - the BioInnovation Academy, beginning this summer.</p>
												<p>
													This week-long, totally immersive summer program focused on innovation and biomedicine is for high school students, grades 10-12, interested in careers in science, technology, engineering, math and medicine.</p>
												<p>
													The BioInnovation Academy is designed to educate the next generation of entrepreneurs, engineers and medical professionals by encouraging critical thinking, problem solving skills and community outreach.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Academy's&nbsp;curriculum&nbsp;concentrates&nbsp;overall on&nbsp;innovation&nbsp;incorporating all five <a href="http://www.abiakron.org/centers-of-innovation" linktype="1" shape="rect" target="_blank" track="off">centers within ABIA</a>.</p>
												<p>
													<strong>What will students experience?</strong></p>
												<p>
													Students will:</p>
												<ul>
													<li>
														have the opportunity to observe various clinical scenarios through ABIA's <a href="http://www.abiakron.org/csihe" linktype="1" shape="rect" target="_blank" track="off">Center for Simulation and Integrated Health Education</a> with the aim of identifying patient centered problems</li>
													<li>
														work in groups to solve the problem in two separate tracks - Devices and Public Health</li>
													<li>
														present their solution and prototypes at the end of the program in front of an audience of their peers and their parents</li>
													<li>
														gain&nbsp;a toolkit, with which, they can create either
														<ul>
															<li>
																prototypes of their solutions through ABIA's <a href="http://www.abiakron.org/mddc" linktype="1" shape="rect" target="_blank" track="off">Medical Device Development Center </a>or</li>
															<li>
																design public health intervention programs through ABIA's <a href="http://www.abiakron.org/cchi" linktype="1" shape="rect" target="_blank" track="off">Center for Community Health Improvement&nbsp;</a></li>
														</ul>
													</li>
												</ul>
												<p>
													<strong>What skills will students gain?</strong></p>
												<ul>
													<li>
														<a href="http://www.abiakron.org/acls-bls" linktype="1" shape="rect" target="_blank" track="off">Basic Life Support (BLS) certification</a></li>
													<li>
														Knowledge of how to design and prototype medical devices along with brainstorming techniques</li>

														Insight&nbsp;to designing public health intervention programs targeted at specific disease states</li>

														Skills on presenting innovative solutions in a business setting&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>

      <title>Family Reading Festival &amp; Annual Day of Reading</title>

	<strong>The 6th&nbsp;Annual Family Reading Festival will be held February 9, 2013 from 10 – 4 at the Main Library. &nbsp;We are excited this year to once again be headlining Jim Gill who will be joined on stage by members of the Akron Youth Symphony. Last year about 1,500 folks visited the event and enjoyed the many activities you all made available for them. &nbsp;We hope you can join us again! &nbsp;We are pleased to announce that this year’s festival leads into This City Reads!&nbsp;10th Annual Day of Reading - Wednesday, February 13th! &nbsp;We are hoping that everyone can find one more person to promise to read so that we can meet our 100,000 reader goal!</strong></p>
