SEI'S Community Forum on January 29th! Summit Education Initiative regrets to inform you that the Community Forum Event and screening of the film “First Generation” that was to be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Buchtel Community Learning Center is cancelled due to such low response.  It is SEI’s hope and intent to show this film at a different time, which hopefully will be more conducive to increased attendance.

Join us for a community forum on the documentary film “First Generation”.  This film is narrated by Golden Globe nominee, Blair Underwood. “First Generation” tells the story of four high school students who set out to break the cycle of poverty and bring hope to their families and communities by pursing a college education. 

The free showing will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m.  Following the film there will be a time for discussion, to get information on college access programs in our community, and to enjoy some light refreshments.

Please note that parking is in the back of the school building and child care will be provided in the library.

Introducing the BioInnovation Academy

The Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA) is proud to annouce its new educational initiative - the BioInnovation Academy, beginning this summer.

This week-long, totally immersive summer program focused on innovation and biomedicine is for high school students, grades 10-12, interested in careers in science, technology, engineering, math and medicine.

The BioInnovation Academy is designed to educate the next generation of entrepreneurs, engineers and medical professionals by encouraging critical thinking, problem solving skills and community outreach.  The Academy's curriculum concentrates overall on innovation incorporating all five centers within ABIA.

What will students experience?

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Knowledge of how to design and prototype medical devices along with brainstorming techniques
  • Insight to designing public health intervention programs targeted at specific disease states
  • Skills on presenting innovative solutions in a business setting       

When will the BioInnovation Academy take place? 

ABIA will offer the BioInnovation Academy twice throughout the Summer of 2013.

  • Session 1: June 17-21
  • Session 2: July 15-19

The 6th Annual Family Reading Festival will be held February 9, 2013 from 10 – 4 at the Main Library.  We are excited this year to once again be headlining Jim Gill who will be joined on stage by members of the Akron Youth Symphony. Last year about 1,500 folks visited the event and enjoyed the many activities you all made available for them.  We hope you can join us again!  We are pleased to announce that this year’s festival leads into This City Reads! 10th Annual Day of Reading - Wednesday, February 13th!  We are hoping that everyone can find one more person to promise to read so that we can meet our 100,000 reader goal!
